{"id":52,"date":"2012-12-08T16:03:12","date_gmt":"2012-12-08T22:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mr.danoff.org\/eng099\/?page_id=52"},"modified":"2012-12-10T22:15:37","modified_gmt":"2012-12-11T04:15:37","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mr.danoff.org\/eng099\/?page_id=52","title":{"rendered":"About this MOOC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the first offering of a MOOC for English as a Foreign or Second Language students named ENG 099 Conversational American English from <a href=\"http:\/\/dalab.cc\">Mr. Danoff&#8217;s Teaching Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I first wrote about starting this MOOC in late 2011 after having the pleasure of seeing Mr. Jim Groom&#8217;s lecture on DS106, what struck me was how he emphasized DS106 was more of an &#8220;Open Educational Experience&#8221; rather than a &#8220;Massive Open Online Course.&#8221; I&#8217;m calling this a MOOC, but I want the focus to be towards generating an &#8220;Open Educational Experience&#8221; where everyone is participating creating wonderful content that other students and teachers can, to <a href=\"http:\/\/opencontent.org\/blog\/archives\/355\">quote David Wiley<\/a>\u00a0(8 Aug. 2007):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The four main types of activity enabled by open content can be summarized as &#8216;the four Rs&#8217;:<\/p>\n<p>Reuse \u2013 Use the work verbatim, just exactly as you found it<br \/>\nRevise \u2013 Alter or transform the work so that it better meets your needs<br \/>\nRemix \u2013 Combine the (verbatim or altered) work with other works to better meet your needs<br \/>\nRedistribute \u2013 Share the verbatim work, the reworked work, or the remixed work with others<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/04\/education\/edlife\/massive-open-online-courses-are-multiplying-at-a-rapid-pace.html\">The Year of The MOOC<\/a>&#8221; this particular one is likely classified as a cMOOC, focused on participants making connections amongst themselves and the internet\/world. In other words<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Connectivist MOOCs are more social and focused on deriving meaning of the learning experience with others, Virginia Commonwealth&#8217;s Becker said.
