  1. News Hour: Read the “First Lady’s Anti-Obesity Effort Gets Results” News for You article and completed the fun Teacher’s Guide activity that had the students develop a healthy breakfast menu for a food desert. As an astute student pointed out, the article was a nice complement to our current NorthStar 2 Unit on Organic Food. Trans fat commonly used to keep food tasting scrumptously fresh longer was a new vocabulary term. image

What we did in our CoC IEP 200 Class on Wednesday February 6th

Details from today’s (Wed. 6 Feb. 2013COC IEP 200 Class at the College of Chicago. You can compare what happened below with the lesson plan, heading into class. For context, please see this page with more past lesson plans for this class and all the class recaps.

NEWS & CURRENT EVENTS

Read “British Towns Sell Art to Pay the Bills” article from News for You about London’s Towler Hamlets borough selling ‘Draped Seated Woman,’ a Henry Moore sculpture, to balance their budget.

Oddly enough, Moore’s ‘Recumbent Figure’ sculpture came up in class Monday as the characters in the ‘Two Worlds’ short story gave their thoughts on the piece while perusing Tate Modern.

GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT 1 (FOURTH ED.)

Reviewed page 45 together as a class then completed Exercise 3 on page 46.

SURVEY PROJECT

Discussed how it went last night for students conducting their surveys in Chicagoland. Everyone had positive things to say about the experience! Then taught the students how to craft topic sentences for the “Survey Results” and “Analysis” paragraphs of their essays.

COMIC BOOK

Started our fifth “Fantom of the Fair” story appearing in Amazing Mystery Funnies #22 (July 1940) following similar themes to previous stories, this one is set in a baseball organization.

FICTION

Finished  and completed the worksheet questions from its publisher (Cambridge UP). After that we looked at numerous photos of Tate Modern to give students a sense of what they were reading about. This led to a short discussion on the differences between classical art and modern art as well as touching on postmodern art and post-postmodern art.

Kept reading ‘The Old Oak Bowl’ from Antoinette Moses’ Frozen Pizza and Other Slices of Life getting trough pages 20 to 21. 2 additional comprehension and 1 discussion question(s) arose in addition to those in the lesson plan linked above:

PAGE 21

  1. In the first paragraph on page 21 who is the “she” woman?
  2. How do the antique shop owners help Mr. Walker?
  3. (Discussion) Do you agree or disagree that it’s wrong to sell presents?“Things are not always what you believe them to be.” Do you believe this? Give an example.

Answers:

  1. His female colleague who sold the chair he repared for her.
  2. By not throwing away furniture they think he might like.
  3. Answers vary.

Survey Project:

  1. Write the “Results” paragraph answering “How and where did you do your survey?” and a table of the results
  2. Write the “Analysis” paragraph answering “Were you surprised by the results?” and “How did they compare to your research?”
  3. Each paragraph has to be more than 3 sentences
