What we did in our CoC IEP 200 Class on Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Details from today’s (Wed. 13 Feb. 2013COC IEP 200 Class at the College of Chicago. You can compare what happened below with the lesson plan, heading into class. For context, please see this page with more past lesson plans for this class and all the class recaps.

Our school is across from St. Peter’s in the Loop and students noticed lunch mass was especially busy today and many people were practicing “Ash Wednesday,” this led to an interesting, quick religion chat.

NEWS & CURRENT EVENTS

Read “Chinese Toad Gets New Home After Sailing to South Africa“ article from News for You (print edition) about a frog from China’s wild adventures in South Africa! The official “Teacher’s Guide” activity had the students write a fictional short story narrated by the frog, recounting his adventures.

I was quite pleased to see the students enjoy the activity and work hard on it, will definitely have them writing more fiction going forward.

FINAL EXAM (PRACTICE)

Students completed a practice final exam today to get ready for tomorrow’s real one (click here to download ODT version from danoff.org).

SURVEY PROJECT

Developed this handout (click here to download ODT version from danoff.org) which helped clarify my expectations to the students about the presentation slide deck, presentation itself and their essays. Spent most of the morning in the computer lab working on these.

GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT 1 (FOURTH ED.)

Reviewed pages 51 to 55 together.

FICTION

Started ‘One of the Lads’ our next story from Antoinette Moses’ Frozen Pizza and Other Slices of Life. First page featured a boy getting dunked in a toilet! This should be a fun read.
